Urban horticulture - in very small spaces
Global urbanization is projected to increase to 67% by 2050 while Africa’s urban population is predicted to triple. Although urbanisation is an important indicator of economic growth and social change, this fast growth comes along with urban poverty. Uganda’s urban poverty rate is at 39 % with many urban dwellers failing to meet daily food demands and income. This project coordinated by Ms. Immaculate Mugisa, therefore focuses on improving productivity and marketing of horticultural crops among urban and peri-urban farmers in city areas. Urban areas are characterized by very small spaces therefore this project promotes small gardening technologies demonstrated in backyards of urban homes. In addition, training on post-harvest handling and value addition for urban markets are conducted with urban small scale farmers.
